Røros Tweed's story begins in the 18th century, when valuable copper was discovered in Røros, a rural town where most people remained poor despite the wealth the mine brought to some. When Peder Hiort, the mine's director, died in 1789, he left his entire fortune to a foundation that provided textile education and raw materials to the less fortunate.

This enabled the community to make warm garments. The foundation purchased these ready-to-wear garments and redistributed them to the community as charity. In 1940 Røros Tweed was established as a sales outlet for locally made textiles.

Today the company's core and passion remain Norwegian wool. Through craftsmanship it creates wool products intended to last for generations, and it aims to inspire future textile artists and designers to keep the tradition alive.
