Description

Designed by Jean Prouvé in the early 1950s for the Cité Universitaire in Antony, near Paris, the Antony armchair is one of the final furniture pieces developed by the French engineer and designer. Production began at the Ateliers Jean Prouvé after winning the contract to furnish 150 rooms of what was then the largest student residence in Europe. Its distinctive shape and solid construction soon made it suitable for a variety of settings, from private interiors to public spaces.Structurally, it recalls elements of the Compas Direction table: steel sheet legs joined by a tubular crossbar, and a curved plywood shell held in place by two metal brackets. Antony was the first Prouvé seat to enter the Vitra Design Museum’s collection, following Rolf Fehlbaum’s purchase of a vintage model in 1984. This acquisition initiated a direct dialogue with the Prouvé family, eventually leading to the production of selected pieces starting in 2000.In 2025, Vitra introduces the Antony Limited Edition, available until December. The shell is made of wax-finished European pine; the metal frame is powder-coated in Rouge Corsaire. Each piece is individually numbered. Warranty: 10 years.
